Position: Athletic Trainer

Contract: 240 days

Location: Barnwell High School
Reports to Director of Athletics & High School Principal
Position will be open until filled

 

Position Summary:

 

The Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive healthcare services to student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care. This role supports a safe and positive athletic environment by collaborating closely with coaches, school administrators, parents, and medical professionals. The Athletic Trainer ensures compliance with all state, district, and professional standards while promoting the physical well-being and performance of student-athletes.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform injury prevention, assessment, treatment, first aid, and reconditioning in accordance with SC DHEC and SCATA guidelines
  • Provide medical coverage for athletic practices, home contests, and away competitions as scheduled to include preseason and postseason contests
  • Develop and implement emergency action plans for athletic events and school-sponsored activities
  • Monitor rehabilitation progress and communicate return-to-play recommendations to coaching staff
  • Conduct and oversee required pre-season and annual athletic physicals
  • Apply proper taping, bracing, strapping, and fitting of protective athletic equipment
  • Supervise daily operations of athletic training rooms, including equipment maintenance and inventory
  • Maintain accurate treatment logs, injury reports, and medical documentation
  • Submit injury reports to coaches, athletic directors, principals, and other designated personnel
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding injury care and treatment plans
  • Collaborate with physicians and follow prescribed medical treatments and referrals
  • Monitor environmental conditions and identify potential safety risks (heat, weather, field conditions)
  • Submit annual budget requests for athletic training supplies and equipment
  • Assist coaching staff with injury-prevention strategies and risk-reduction programs
  • Maintain compliance with district policies, recordkeeping requirements, and professional standards
  • Teach up to two blocks of Athletic Training and/or First Aid courses, if certified by the state and attend required district and school professional development when requested
  • Create supervised opportunities for students to participate within the athletic training program
  • Maintain confidential student records in a secure location
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the athletic program

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training (required)
  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training (required for individuals entering the profession after 2022, per CAATE standards)
  • Previous athletic training experience at the high school or collegiate level preferred

Required certifications and Licensure:

  • South Carolina Athletic Training Licensure through SCLLR
  • Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers
  • CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) number preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, coaches, administrators, and medical professionals
  • Thorough knowledge of athletic training principles, techniques, and equipment use
  • Ability to apply research-based best practices in athletic healthcare
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability in high-pressure situations
  • Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and fostering a positive athletic environment

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and assisting injured athletes
  • Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours
  • Duties performed in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather conditions, bodily fluids, and medical chemicals
  • Local and overnight travel required
