Early Childhood/Elementary Guidance Counselor
School Year: 2026-2027
Location: Kelly Edwards Elementary School
Contract: 205 Days
Reports to: Principal
Certification: Applicants must possess a valid Certificate issued by the South Carolina Department of Education – (Certification Code 86 Guidance–Elementary Grades Kindergarten – 6th Grade)
Position will be open until filled.
Job Description:
- Provide a comprehensive guidance program for all students.
- The school guidance counselor plans and conducts continuous program evaluations and maintains appropriate program accountability documentation.
- Consult with teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students.
- Provide support to other educational programs.
- Serve as an advocate for children.
- Provide counseling to individuals and small groups as needed to help them in meeting their education, vocational, personal and social needs.
- Refer students and families to special programs, specialists and/or community agencies when appropriate.
- Coordinate activities or programs designated by the principal that serve to promote the social and academic well-being of students such as orientations, drug and alcohol prevention, career fairs, etc.
- Provides classroom/school-wide guidance activities and individual/group counseling services that promote student educational, career, and personal/social development.
- Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth and self-understanding.
- Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
- Works effectively with and responds to diverse cultures or backgrounds.
- Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean and professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
- Demonstrates proficiency in 21st century literacies and skills.
- Demonstrates outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Has experience working with primary school students preferred
- Possesses knowledge of instructional technology and its applications to the guidance field
- Demonstrates skill in developing interpersonal relationships with pupils, parents, teachers, staff and the general public.
- Participates in IEP meetings as requested.
- Leads 504 meetings, organizes 504 documentation, and disseminates 504 information as appropriate.
- Serves as Student Assistant Team Coordinator.
- Works in cooperation with the administration in assessment planning and data collection.
